The history of green tea is so long in Shiga. Saicho sowed the seeds that were brought from Tang in 805. That became origin of green tea in Shiga.It is said that the corner of tea garden of Hiyoshi Taisha is a thing of that time.
"Ruijyukokush ""Nihonngoki"have the following descriptions. Eicyuu made a cup of tea for Emperor Saga .They made tea garden in Kinai,Omi,Tamba and Harima for the Imperial court.In Shiga prefecture ,tea was planted in Koka Shigaraki at that time. Zhejiang Province in China,there is the Chinese tea industry museum. There is a panel exhibition at the museum. They say that Saicho brought teas back from Tang.Then He planted it in Shiga. |

In 1356,Donno of Jomyoji brought tea back from Daitokuji in Kyoto.And he Cultivated the tea.
300 years later,Tenrei of Eiunji widely cultivated the tea and he gave the tea to the villagers and travelers as the beverage.
The tea became famous as"Akebono".
The tea garden is the largest in our prefecture.

The recent years,Tsuchiyama town went mechanization of cultivation management.
Ride-style machine and rail-style have introduced in Tsuchiyama town.
Improvement of tea plantation and modified of green tea have been carried out. Mechanization area is expanding.
In Tsuchiyama town,cultivation of Kabuse cha is popular.It has accounted for 15% of the first piking of tea leaves.
In recent years,directly covered garden is mainly.But there are covered terraces. |

The history of tea culitivation in Shigaraki dates back to the Heian period.In 805,Saicho had planted tea. Tea cultivation began for Imperial court in 815 year. Tea has been grown in mountainous slopes at an altitude of 300~450m.It has earned high praise from all over the country as nice flavor tea"Asamiya tea".
Shigaraki tea has been awarded the Minister of Agriculture,Forestry and Fisheries Award at department of tea fair ordinarily Sencha in kansai and Japan many times. Now culutivation area is 17ha. |

The cultivation of tea in Hino city has started in Muromachi period.
In 1533,They presented tea for Gonara Emperor.
He was pleased and he named it Asahiyama They presented tea for Gomizuo Emperor in Edo period.Gonara Emperor pleased and he named it Asahiyama. Since then,Tea of Hino has been called Asahiyama. Sengoku Daimyou,Writer,Mr Ujisato Gamo was a lord of a Hino castle. It is said thatHe use tea ceremony"Wakakusashimizu". Ujiteru is one person of the seven Rikyu's Disciple. He studied with Sen no Rikyu. He concentrated on Wabi of tea ceremony. |

Mandokoro tea has begun when Koshikei Shu-kaku who found the Taizo temple planted tea this land in. Production volume of mandokoro has been reduced.
But Mandokoro has known for the refined tea"Akebono". It is said that "Uji is known for tea.Tea is Mandokoro".
In Mandokoro,there is an old tree that is estimated 300 years old. East-West 7m.North-South 7.3m.Maximum stem circumference is 30cm. Shiga Prefecture designated it natural monument. The tea tree has been cultivated to make Gyokuro today. |
